History of Sibton White Horse Inn

Historians cannot be exactly sure as to when the first building stood on the site. What now forms the cellar floor is a piece of splendid ancient history. Sibton White Horse Inn from days gone byStylistic evidence strongly suggests the design and style of materials used to be very similar to those used in the Roman era. We know the Romans occupied Britain between AD79 and AD450. It is thought the original building that stood by this interesting piece of history was burnt to the ground in an attempt to contain and defeat the Black Death (Bubonic Plague) that spread through East Anglia in early 1349.

The present White Horse's timber frame construction was built in 1580 and incorporates the Roman style floor. It is most likely that the mighty sixteenth century timbers in the bar came from the shipyard at Woodbridge, where the navy decommissioned their ships. It was common for local builders to purchase the mighty long seasoned timbers.

The original front door, now located within the bar, displays its sixteenth century hand-made iron nails, square in profile, providing the strength the oak demands. Once inside, it is clear the White Horse is stacked with history and tradition. The large inglenooks and various old settles and pews simply complete this fascinating Inn.
